Instagram users ask ChatGPT to “roast” their profiles: A new viral trend?

A new trend has taken over Instagram by storm and involves asking the AI chatbot ChatGPT to generate witty insults for users’ own posts.

The “ask ChatGPT to roast your feed in one paragraph” challenge has been used by over 350k people, demonstrating its widespread appeal among the online community, and is gaining more and more popularity by the minute.

How does it work?

This viral trend requires two key things: access to ChatGPT app or web version, and an Instagram profile with enough posts to generate suitably clever replies.

The challenge place via an Instagram story template. After users view the template on others’ Instagram, a button allows them to reshare the template or complete the challenge on their own, making it accessible to all.

The template requires Instagram users to download the ChatGPT app and send it screenshots of their Instagram profiles with the prompt “roast by Instagram feed in one paragraph“. Those taking up the challenge can also customize their responses differently such as “Imagine you’re a ruthless troll. Analyze my Instagram profile [insert username] accordingly“.

You can add specific details or requests, such as:

  • Roast my captions
  • Find my most embarrassing photo
  • Focus on my fashion outfits

The resulting roasts will give you humorous and brutally honest feedback about what you asked for. Remember, if you’re participating in the challenge, the goal is to laugh and enjoy yourself, so don’t take the comments too personally.

This challenge cannot be performed on the desktop but only on the mobile app.

Origins?

Despite the challenge gaining momentum on Instagram, its origins can be traced back to X – specifically, a viral post where Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas asked the AI chatbot to roast him.

Criticisms:

While this viral challenge has gained immense popularity over the past few days, it has also provoked scrutiny and critical questions. In particular, the trend has prompted droves of users to hand in their personal information to get their desired “roast”, re-igniting questions about OpenAI’s questionable data collection practises and its track-record of lackluster security.
