‘Best friends’? Google’s Pixel and iPhone poke fun at each other in a new Diwali ad

Google is back with a new Diwali-themed advertisement for its #BestPhonesForever campaign, featuring iPhone and Pixel phones.

Depicting what might be the tech world’s oddest friendship, the ad shows a playful exchange of Diwali where the iPhone’s attempts to impress the Pixel with its AI capabilities backfires.

Eager to share the festive spirit, the iPhone extends wishes to its “best friend” and hopes for a year filled with new AI abilities and other “sweet” enhancements. However, it is met with an unexpected response: much to its surprise, the Pixel states that it already has all the AI features one can wish for.

In between the entertaining conversation, Google sneaks in mentions of its latest digital additions: Gemini Live, Add Me, and email summarization, among others.

However, this playful ad takes an unexpectedly sweet turn when, after the iPhone fails to find something that Pixel doesn’t have, Pixel reveals that its greatest wish has already been granted – having iPhone as a best friend.

The ad was well-received by audiences, with many praising the innovative marketing concept and appreciation for Diwali.

“Google’s marketing team definitely deserves a raise,” a user wrote.

 “Next level ad,” another praised.

“It is so rare seeing such big brands recognising festivals like Diwali, it brings me so much joy to see google doing so,” a third user added.

Google’s ad comes at a time when iPhones are expected to get Apple Intelligence features, as well as several new AI features. In some ways, it is reminiscent of Samsung’s playful mockery of its smartphone competitor. However, Google’s emphasis on friendship adds a more endearing touch to its marketing tactics, appealing to users during the height of the festive season.
