‘JioHotstar’ domain bought by Delhi developer, asks Reliance to fund his Cambridge education

In a game-changing twist, a Delhi-based app developer has acquired the ‘JioHotstar.com’ domain and seeks to sell it to fund his higher education at Cambridge University.

Hoping to catch the attention of Reliance Industries, newly established webpage, titled “JioHotstar: Best of Entertainment, Streaming Soon”, carries a heartfelt message to the company.

The developer explained how he predicted a potential merger between Jio and Disney+Hotstar, as well as the new potential name. Having realized that the domain was available, the developer quickly acquired it with the goal of selling it and acquiring money to study entrepreneurship at Cambridge, which he was not able to afford.

“When I saw this domain become available, I felt things might just fall into place. My intention of buying this domain was simple: if this merger happens, I might be able to fulfill my dream of studying at Cambridge.”

Known as Domain Parking, this practice has become increasingly popular in the digital age, with potentially useful web addresses being purchased in anticipation of future sales opportunities.

The developer asked Reliance to reach out to him on mail@jiohotstar.com to purchase the domain, hoping that all their needs could be met.

“For a multi-billion dollar company like Reliance, this will be a minor expense, but for me, the sale of this domain would be truly life-changing,” he wrote.

New Update: Reliance Seeks Legal Action

In an unexpected twist on October 24th, the developer revealed that Ambujesh Yadav, Associate Vice President of Commercials at Reliance, had made contact with him. However, the response was not what he had hoped for.

Instead of accepting the developer’s request for £93,345, matching his Cambridge EMBA tuition fees, he was informed that his bid had been denied and that Reliance may proceed with legal action.

“I don’t have the power to stand against Reliance. I don’t feel I infringed any trademark when I bought this in 2023, since JioHotstar was not even in existence at that time. No body had trademark for JioHotstar when i bought it. I might automatically lose access of this domain in few hours. If any legal professional could help, I would be grateful,” he wrote.

The developer expressed his ongoing hope that Reliance could reconsider his fair request.
