Elon Musk’s X (formerly known as Twitter) has rolled out a free version of its AI chatbot, Grok, in an unexpected move to broaden its user base.
Previously locked behind a premium subscription, the offering is now accessible to non-premium users, albeit with certain limitations.
On Friday, internet users discovered that the chatbot was available to free-tier subscribers, allowing them to send up to 10 messages to Grok every two hours. The free version also includes limited access to image-related features, with users able to analyze up to three images and generate four new ones per day.
Users must also have an X account that is at least seven days old and linked to a phone number in order to access Grok’s free-tier chatbot.
Access to Grok is more extensive for X’s Premium subscribers, who pay $7 for Premium and $14 for Premium+. They are allowed up to 50 questions per day.
About Grok AI:
Launched by in 2023, Grok is the flagship product of Musk’s xAI and is currently valued at $50 billion. The company’s AI offerings have an edge due to the vast amounts of data collected from X and Tesla.
Its abilities go beyond casual conversation, and can assist with research, coding support, and even automate customer service for brands.
Grok VS Gemini VS Chatgpt:
Grok’s free-tier rollout is widely regarded as a strategic effort to compete with other popular, no-cost chatbots such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Anthropic’s Claude, all of which have established a significant presence in the AI landscape.
Certain reports suggest that Grok AI may also get a standalone app like Gemini and ChatGPT, which have both been available on iOS and Android for months.
This rising rivalry has extended beyond the digital arena: notably, Musk has added Microsoft to his lawsuit against OpenAI and Sam Altman, accusing them of attempting to illegally monopolize the AI market.
