Bollywood actress Kriti Sanon has found herself in the middle of a fake news controversy with Indian media outlets claiming that she endorsed suspicious trading and investment platforms on eigth season of the talk show ‘Koffee with Karan’.
However, Kriti has denied the claims, calling them defamatory and asserting that she will be taking legal action.
Here’s what happened:
In December 2022, a series of startling Bollywood news articles and rumors began making rounds claiming that Kriti Sanon promoted suspicious “get-rich-quick” schemes during Koffee with Karan. These included several prominent entertainment channels, including Bollywood Lif and Time Business News, and caused an immense stir across the industry.
Rumors about Kriti Sanon followed a probe by the ED into the Mahadev app online betting scam case in October in which several celebrities, including Ranbir Kapoor and Kapil Sharma, were summoned as part of the investigation.
Articles about Kriti Sanon identified two main platforms which they claimed she promoted: Immediate Evex and Immediate 5.0 Evex Ai.
Sanon took to social media to clarify the situation, stating that she has never discussed trading platforms on the popular talk show and labelled the articles as defamatory. “These articles are completely fake and false and have been published with a dishonest and mala fide intent.” she wrote, requesting everyone to be cautious against them.
She added, “I have taken legal action against false articles and reports and issued legal notices.”
Several prominent Bollywood journalists across India have also come to her defence. Rajat Sharma, a respected senior editor-in-chief of IndiaTV, published a rebuttal article defending Kriti Sanon and asserting that the scam accusations are “fake” from unrealiable sources. Similarly, popular entertainment reporters and commentators, including Faridoon Shahryar and Aakanksha Naval-Shetye, also dismissed the scam reports targeting Kriti as baseless and lacking credibility.
