Threads is reportedly developing a new feature called “Loops” to allow users to find and participate in topic-specific communities within the app.
While still in development, this feature will seemingly allow users to group individual Threads into Loops, which will direct relevant content into group discussions.
First reported by TechCrunch, developer Chris Messina discovered the Loops reference in the latest app update. The code mentioned the ability to join and leave ‘Loop’ communities, as well as fields that referred to the community name, bio, and other such elements.
Leaker Alessandro Paluzzi discovered examples that showed what Loops may look like from within the Threads app, which included “a shortcut to the composer and the home header”.
A new speech bubble icon has also been discovered next to the notifications bell at the top of the app, identified by Paluzzi as the Loops button.
Details about Loops are slim. In a statement to TechCrunch, an unidentified Instagram spokesperson claimed that the feature was “in early development” and was not being tested internally or externally “at this time”. However, not much more is known about it.
However, it still isn’t clear how Loops will function, as Threads doesn’t use traditional hashtags. Instead, hashtags are more of a hyperlinked tag for following topics.
Regardless, this development suggests that Threads’ current goal is to bridge their users’ Thread interactions and aid them in finding relevant discussions in the app.
