WhatsApp rolls out Meta AI chatbot to select users in India: Here’s how it works

WhatsApp is testing a new generative AI enable feature in India via a limited rollout. A report by WABetainfo, which tracks upcoming features in WhatsApp, select users will now be able to use the Meta AI chatbot.

What is it?

The Meta AI chatbot, announced by the company in September 2023, is a new assistant that users can interact with like a person and is powered by Meta’s own custom model and Llama-2. Users can ask questions to the Meta AI assistant, and it will respond to their queries.

Reportedly, there are two ways WhatsApp is currently testing this feature. They are rolling out the chatbot into the search bar but only in specific countries. For users in India specifically, Meta has located the chatbot within the top app bar for easy access.

WhatsApp has clarified that Meta AI can only read and respond to chats that specifically mention @MetaAI and don’t have access to other chats. The prompt added that “As always, your personal messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted, meaning not even WhatsApp or Meta can see or listen to them”.

How do chat with Meta AI:

If you find the feature interesting, here’s what you can do:

  • Tap on the circular icon located on the top right of the main chat list of WhatsApp
  • Read and accept the terms (if prompted)
  • Select a suggested prompt from the screen, or type in your own prompt, and tap the “SEND” button to begin the conversation.

Currently, this this chatbot only supports English.
