Bailou Introduces the Disco Saree, A Contemporary Take on Handloom Celebration Wear

[Mumbai, 19th March 2026] – Bailou introduces the Disco Saree Collection, a limited-edition launch that repositions handloom within the language of contemporary celebration. Moving away from nostalgia-driven interpretations of craft, the collection explores a new horizon for the saree.

With this launch, Bailou challenges the long-standing perception of handloom as reserved for heritage occasions or ceremonial wear. Instead, the Disco Saree Collection presents handcrafted sarees designed for movement, individuality, and modern social settings. Rather than reviving the disco era literally, the collection channels its spirit of freedom, joy, and expression into a forward-looking design language aligned with the brand’s evolving aesthetic.

Conceptualised as a series of “Cocktail Sarees,” the name reflects a spirited concoction of merriment, laughter, quirkiness, and ease. Designed as a limited-edition offering, each piece balances elegance with playfulness, allowing wearers to embrace Indian craft while participating seamlessly in contemporary evening culture.

Craft remains central to the collection’s identity. The sarees are created using the traditional Jamdani weaving technique, an intricate extra-weft method used to build motifs and patterns directly into the fabric.  Handwoven by skilled artisans, each saree emerges as a finished textile directly from the loom, eliminating the need for heavy post-production embellishment.

What sets the collection apart is its highly intricate weaving innovation. Golden sequins are not added as surface embellishments but are trapped between two woven layers during the weaving process itself, creating a subtle interplay of light and texture This is achieved through a double-cloth weaving technique in which two layers are woven simultaneously on the loom, forming delicate pockets within the fabric where the sequins are carefully inserted and held in place. This innovative pocket-sequin weaving method has been recognised with a UNESCO Seal of Excellence for its technical innovation and craftsmanship. The textile is further enriched through the hand-shifting of threads using the artisan’s thumb, a nuanced technique that lends the saree a distinctive tactile texture across its body. This is complemented by Jamdani weaving, an extra-weft technique where additional threads are inserted by hand to create motifs, pattern, and depth directly within the fabric. A knotting technique introduces further structural detailing, while borders and pallus feature wave-like patterns created using organza yarn through Jamdani weaving, giving the saree a subtle three-dimensional illusion that shifts with movement.

Visually, the sarees unfold as a study in depth and contrast. Against deep, inky bases, delicate gold sequin dots appear almost suspended within the fabric, catching light with movement rather than overt shine. Sections of the drape reveal dense, sculptural textures where layered yarns create a tactile surface, contrasting with the fluidity of the silk base. The result is a quiet radiance: fluid and lightweight. The palette embraces deep, after-dark tones including black, dark grey, and midnight blue, reinforcing the collection’s eveningwear sensibility while allowing the craftsmanship of the weave to take visual precedence. Produced intentionally in limited quantities, the collection prioritises individuality over replication, ensuring that each piece retains the feeling of a one-of-a-kind creation.

Beyond design, the collection reflects Bailou’s ongoing commitment to sustaining traditional craftsmanship. By working closely with Jamdani artisan communities and providing consistent work throughout the year, the brand supports both livelihood continuity and the preservation of generational skills. For the artisans involved, the Disco Saree Collection represents an opportunity to reinterpret inherited knowledge through a contemporary lens, freeing the craft from rigid expectations while preserving its technical integrity. The process enables artisans to create something distinctly modern while rooted in ancestral expertise.

The Disco Saree Collection will be available at Bailou Bombay and Byloom, Kolkata, with prices ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹50,000.

Bailou continues to build its design philosophy on the idea that tradition is not static; it evolves through reinterpretation. With the Disco Saree Collection, the brand invites a new generation of wearers and makers to rediscover the saree as a living, contemporary form of expression
