TikTok First to Stop Working Among 59 Banned Chinese Apps in India

Amid the escalating military tensions between India and China at the Galwan River Valley, the Indian government declared a ban on 59 major Chinese apps. The hugely popular TikTok, which has its largest user base in India was also a part of this list. The government stated that this was done over data and privacy concerns of Indian users.

India’s Ministry of Electronics & IT announced this ban in a press release on 29th June 2020, where they explained the security risks posed by Chinese apps. 

As of now, TikTok users will see a ‘No Network connection’ error upon opening the app along with a message from TikTok’s India Team. Besides this, the app is no longer available for download on Android and iOS in India. While most of the other apps on the list are still available and working, they may soon follow suit. The ban severely affects TikTok influencers as it provided a great platform for them to show off their creativity without the need for expensive equipment.

In the meantime, TikTok creators could switch over to alternative options like Dubsmash, Vine, Mitron, Chingari, Funimate, Roposo and Triller among others as a creative outlet.
