Mumbai | January 2026:

Mumbai local trains recently became the site of a sports-led public tribute, as Mumbai Indians brought women’s cricket into the city’s everyday commute.

In mid-January, the familiar ladies’ compartment signage on select Mumbai local trains were replaced with images of Indian women cricketers Harmanpreet Kaur and Amanjot Kaur, both seen wearing Mumbai Indians jerseys. The activity coincided with the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL), where the two players represented the Mumbai Indians franchise.

The initiative was later highlighted by Reliance Industries Limited, which described it as an ode to the excellence achieved by women in Indian sport. By choosing Mumbai’s women-only compartments as the surface, the tribute placed elite women athletes within a space defined by daily routine, safety and familiarity rather than spectacle.

What stood out was the understated nature of the execution. There were no promotional taglines, calls-to-action or overt campaign messaging. Instead, the visibility relied on recognizable faces, team association and repeated exposure within one of the city’s most habitual public environments.

The choice of the ladies’ compartments also ensured natural contextual relevance. Long associated with protection and access, the space briefly became a site of representation where women travelling for work, education and daily responsibilities encountered sporting role models without mediation.
